Workers' remittances represent a resource flow from rich to poor countries. The global value of remittances has risen sharply to over US$100 billion a year. This represents the second largest external income source for developing countries behind foreign direct investment (FDI), and far outstrips official development assistance (ODA) (Orozco 2003a). Remittances to developing countries are becoming increasingly important as other sources of external income decline. The impact of remittances on development, however, is inadequately reflected in the literature. Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) is the world's largest remittance-receiving region. With 9 per cent of the world's population, the region receives approximately 32 per cent of the world's remittances. It is appreciably greater than tourist revenues in many countries, and in five countries in this region, remittances account for over 10 per cent of GNP (World Bank 2003). Within LAC, Nicaragua stands out from other countries. While the US dollar value of remittances to Nicaragua, estimated at US$610 million in 2001, is quite modest compared with the US$10 billion flowing into Mexico, for example, the relative volume of this resource compared with other income flows, and the potential for the country's development, makes Nicaragua's case exceptional. Representing almost 24 per cent of its GNP, remittances to Nicaragua have a significant social and economic impact. The value of known remittances is greater than total export earnings, on a par with the country's ODA, and almost five times that of FDI. As such, remittances currently represent the second largest single resource flow into the country. This is a recent phenomenon.

Background
Social norms are theoretically hypothesized to influence health-related behaviors such as physical activity and eating behaviors. However, empirical evidence relating social norms to these behaviors, independently of other more commonly-investigated social constructs such as social support, is scarce and findings equivocal, perhaps due to limitations in the ways in which social norms have been conceptualized and assessed. This study investigated associations between clearly-defined social norms and a range of physical activity and eating behaviors amongst women, adjusting for the effects of social support.

Methods
Self-report survey data about particular physical activity (leisure-time moderate-vigorous activity; volitional walking; cycling for transport) and eating behaviors (fast food, soft drink and fruit and vegetable consumption), and social norms and support for these, were provided by 3,610 women aged 18-46 years living in socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods in Victoria, Australia.

Results
Results of regression analyses showed that social norms for physical activity and eating behaviors predicted these respective behaviors relatively consistently; these associations generally remained significant after adjustment for social support.

Conclusions
Acknowledging the cross-sectional study design, these data confirm theoretical accounts of the importance of social norms for physical activity and eating behaviors, and suggest that this is independent from social support. Intervention strategies aimed at promoting physical activity and healthy eating could incorporate strategies aimed at modifying social norms relating to these behaviors.

Objective The Clinical Global Impression Scale (CGI) is established as a core metric in psychiatric research. This study aims to test the validity of CGI as a clinical outcome measure suitable for routine use in a private inpatient setting.

Methods The CGI was added to a standard battery of routine outcome measures in a private psychiatric hospital. Data were collected on consecutive admissions over a period of 24 months, which included clinical diagnosis, demographics, service utilization and four routine measures (CGI, HoNOS, MHQ-14 and DASS-21) at both admission and discharge. Descriptive and comparative data analyses were performed.

Results Of 786 admissions in total, there were 624 and 614 CGI-S ratings completed at the point of admission and discharge, respectively, and 610 completed CGI-I ratings. The admission and discharge CGI-S scores were correlated (r = 0.40), and the indirect improvement measures obtained from their differences were highly correlated with the direct CGI-I scores (r = 0.71). The CGI results reflected similar trends seen in the other three outcome measures.

Conclusions The CGI is a valid clinical outcome measure suitable for routine use in an inpatient setting. It offers a number of advantages, including its established utility in psychiatric research, sensitivity to change, quick and simple administration, utility across diagnostic groupings, and reliability in the hands of skilled clinicians.

This paper reports on a study of what active citizenship means from the perspective of citizens who are active within third sector organisations. It is based on an empirical study involving 1,610 respondents across 11 towns in six countries. The study explored how active citizenship is manifested, by gathering data on attitudes towards social changes and the forms and practices of active citizenship. There are two major, and apparently contradictory themes emerging in the data. The first theme provides a portrait of active engagement, proactively, and sometimes oppositionally working for a better world. On the other hand, citizens by and large avoid active oppositional engagement in the political process. They prefer to work collaboratively with government and to work at the local level. This second theme can be understood as social maintenance, support for existing structures that facilitates community cohesion, while providing relief for the disadvantaged, oftenwith a conservative charity orwelfare orientation. Following thework of Touraine, the study revealed how citizens act at the local rather than the national level, and focus on concrete issues and interpersonal relations rather than political action aimed at wider policy change. While this form of citizenship action can reflect a conservative form of maintenance, it is equally a creative new form of association and mutual support.

Traditional rectifier circuit can convert AC to DC, but some disadvantages can't be avoided, such as small output current, high power consumption, low conversion efficiency. This paper designs a new type of rectifier voltage-multiplier circuit named MR MOS circuit. It uses a low let-through resistance MOS tube to replace the conventional rectifier diode, and adds the voltage-multiplying factor to the synchronous input port. Therefore, it can improve the rectifier effect and increase the output voltage. By the simulation result of Synopsys Saber Platform, it shows that the new type circuit can implement the rectification and voltage-multiplying by the simulating output pulse voltage of nano fiber made in Deakin University as the source of excitation. It can provide the basic theoretical of the piezoelectric energy harvester (PEH) development, and has certain reference significance to the development of piezoelectricity technology. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications.

With the increasing interest in two-dimensional van der Waals materials, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has emerged as a promising material for electronic and energy storage devices. It suffers from poor cycling stability and low rate capability when used as an anode in lithium ion batteries. Here, N-doped MoS2 nanosheets with 2-8 atomic layers, increased interlayer distance, mesoporous structure and high surface area synthesised by a simple sol-gel method show an enhanced lithium storage performance, delivering a high reversible capacity (998.0 mA h g-1, 50 mA g-1), high rate performance (610 mA h g-1, 2 A g-1), and excellent cycling stability. The excellent lithium storage performance of the MoS2 nanosheets might be due to the better electrical and ionic conductivity and improved lithium ion diffusion which are related to their structural characteristics and high concentration N doping. The possible mechanism of the improved performance is proposed and discussed.
